Despite its original connection with the Scandinavian culture, this helmet was widely used throughout Europe, including Poland. The construction of this helmet is characterized by overlapping metal strips (spangen), which were riveted on bent metal plates. It was known already in the 6th century and practiced until the 15th century. Many such helmets can be seen on the Bayeaux Tapestry, which commemorates scenes from the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It was also widely used during the Crusades.
